Restylane Silk is the newest addition to the well-known Restylane family of dermal fillers by Galderma. Approved by the FDA in 2005 for treating moderate to severe wrinkles on the face, Restylane was created to treat various fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth and nose in addition to lip enhancement to create fuller lips.
Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that reduces the immediate feeling of pain and produce numbness.
Restylane and Restylane Silk are both made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body that holds moisture in the skin, adding youthful volume. While the traditional Restylane has been successfully used for lip augmentation for years, Restylane Silk is specifically formulated to create a better lip enhancement effect with improved results.
Restylane Silk is a transparent liquid gel that can be injected directly into the lips to increase fullness or to smooth out the small wrinkles that form around your mouth, causing the lips to thin with age. It is less viscous than Restylane; therefore, it flows more easily and requires less pressure to inject. Since it has 0.3 percent lidocaine, the discomfort is minimal, with the treatment lasting about 30-60 minutes. By the end of the treatment, wrinkles will be reduced by about 80 percent, your lips will appear fuller, and your results will last about 4-6 months. Additional treatments are necessary to keep your lips full and luscious.
Even if you were born with thin lips, you can get the fuller lips you want by having Restylane Silk injections. The results of this cosmetic treatment are visible immediately. The fillers do not need time to take effect. However, some patients may experience swelling or bruising that can obscure the immediate effects. Once these factors are out of the way, most people will see noticeable change right away. You can also help reduce the effects of swelling and bruising by talking with our staff about what to do and avoid before and after your procedure, such as avoiding aspirins and alcohol prior to your treatment.
Like Restylane Silk, Juvederm (created by the makers of Botox) is an FDA approved hyaluronic acid filler that can be used for lip augmentation treatments. Juvederm is also good for other facial rejuvenation applications to smooth out wrinkles and restore facial volume.
As with any drug, side effects do exist, and not every treatment is right for every person. Side effects after a Restylane Silk treatment are usually minor and your injection specialist will discuss any possible difficulties during your initial consultation, while going over your medical history as well. Side effects from Restylane Silk may include:
To lessen the chance of these risks, avoid high doses of vitamin E supplements, St. John’s Wort, aspirin (consult your primary doctor if you’re on aspirin therapy before stopping any prescribed regimen) and all non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen, before your treatment because they may raise the chances of bleeding and bruising. If you have any of the following conditions, be sure to bring them up to your injector prior to treatment:
You should stop taking aspirin, ibuprofen and fish oil supplements for 2 weeks prior to injection, to decrease your risk of bruising at injection site.
After the procedure there is minimal recovery or downtime. You should see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing. One treatment could smooth your lines and wrinkles for up to 1 year! However, results may vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results. Risks include bruising at site of injections.
